Mustangs Win Mullens Memorial Again

The Choo-Choo City Mustangs 9s won the Mike Mullens Memorial tournament championship Sunday at Rossville City Park for the second consecutive year.

Boosted by good pitching and aggressive base running, the Mustangs (3-0) rolled through the tournament by scoring 42 runs and allowing only three earned.

Playing in their home park in Rossville, the Mustangs defeated the Dalton Titans in the championship game, 14-4.

Riley Harrison got the win with 5 Ks and allowed no hits in 2 1/3 innings of work. Harrison helped his own cause with a triple.

Teddy Lepcio had a pair of hits for the Mustangs in the finale. JC Davis, Austin Chastain, Moose Vaughn, Chad Marsh, Big Mac McAfee and Mark Jones also had hits for the champions.

On Saturday, the Mustangs defeated the Dalton Titans 18-1 and Georgia Seminoles 10-0.
Harrison got the win in the first game and combined with Lepcio and Jones for 11 strikeouts on the way to a 1-hitter over the Titans.

Marsh had a home run and a single to lead the Mustangs attack and Lepcio had a two-run triple to the leftfield fence.

Garrett Higgins and McAfee reached on a single and two base on balls each and Jones added a double. In addition, Harrison and Vaughn singled for the Mustangs.

In the win over the Georgia Seminoles, Vaughn and Chastain combined for a 1-hitter.
Vaughn recorded 6Ks and Chastain came on in relief to get the win by collecting 6Ks on just 24 pitches.

Chastain retired all eight batters he faced during the weekend on 28 pitches, seven strikeouts and a groundout to second base.

Lepcio had a triple and a three-run double and Marsh had two hits to lead the Mustangs over the Seminoles.

Scotty Payne, Harrison, Davis and Jones all added singles.

The Mustangs 9s also captured the Mike Mullins Memorial in 2009 by defeating the North Georgia Bulldogs in the finals.

The Mustangs will take next weekend off before hosting the nine and 12-year-old divisions of the USSSA Border Wars at the Rossville City Park on March 5-7.

Many of the top teams from throughout the south will be visiting the East Brainerd and Rossville parks for the event.
